What Is Blasphemy Of The Holy Spirit?

One of the more serious and sobering statements in Scripture comes from Jesus in Mark 3:29:

“Whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit never has forgiveness but is guilty of an eternal sin.”

That’s a weighty verse! It leads many people to ask, “What could I possibly do that God could never forgive?”

The Scope of God’s Forgiveness

The Bible clearly teaches that through Jesus Christ, all sin can be forgiven.
Romans 6:23 says:

“The wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”

When you believe in Jesus—inviting Him into your life, asking Him to forgive your sins—you are forgiven past, present, and future because His death and resurrection paid your penalty in full.

The One Sin God Cannot Forgive

So what is blasphemy of the Holy Spirit?
It’s continually rejecting the Spirit’s call to put your faith in Jesus Christ.

The Holy Spirit works to draw people to salvation, to open their hearts to the truth of Jesus as Savior and Lord. If a person resists that call for their entire life, refusing to repent and believe, they die apart from God—and that is the one sin that will not be forgiven.

How to Be Sure You Haven’t Committed It

If you’re concerned about this sin, it’s a good sign—because that means your heart is still open to God’s voice. You can settle the matter right now by turning to Jesus in faith:

“Lord Jesus, You are God’s only Son. You died for me and rose from the dead. Please come into my life, forgive me of my sins, and help me live for You. Amen.”

Jesus said in John 3 that this is when you are “born again” spiritually—made new in Him. When you’ve said yes to Jesus, you can be confident you will never be guilty of blasphemy against the Holy Spirit.
